Collaborating with Cyndi Tefft for the last 2-3 months in the YA Indie Carnival has given me the perfect opportunity to learn a lot about her and her book. For example, I know her first book is Between, and she is a successful Indie Author (and a wonderful person). I also know that when I added Between to my ‘to-read’ list on Goodreads, I immediately received several comments from friends stating the book looked interesting to them. I whole-heartedly agreed. As informative as the carnival journey has been, there are still lots of facts about Cyndi that I don’t know…questions yet to be answered.
In the spirit of becoming more familiar with Cyndi Tefft, author, I have been given the honor and privilege of interviewing her. Enjoy the discussion and read (if you haven’t already) Between.
Have you always known you would one day become an author? Not at all! I wrote a lot of (bad) poetry when I was a teenager, mostly just diatribes in loose verse about how This Guy or That Guy would certainly love me if he’d just open his eyes. It wasn’t until 2009 that I decided to try my hand at writing a novel. I wasn’t sure if I could stick with it, but I fell in love with the characters and the story, so it just swept me along.
What author has been the most inspiring for you and why?
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series was my first taste of Scotland and after the first bite, I was hooked! It was as if those books were a key to a lock I had inside me. Everything clicked into place, and I fell in love with Scotland: the people, the culture, the history… and the kilts! I knew I had to have my own Scottish Highlander, so Aiden MacRae was born. *swoon*
How did you end up with such an interesting book cover?
Thanks! I love the cover soooo much! I had an idea of what I wanted it to look like with the dark background, Celtic lettering and blue smoke, but I am severely lacking in Photoshop skills. I met Clare Marshall on an author group on LinkedIn, and she was just starting up Woulds & Shoulds Editing and Design, so I asked her opinion. She and her partner Dave took my idea and cranked it up a notch. I couldn’t be more pleased with their work!
What’s your philosophy when it comes to reviews?
Readers have 1.863 gajillion books to choose from (give or take), so I am honored when they choose to read Between. For an indie author in particular, reviews are critical, so I’m extremely appreciative when someone takes the time to put together their impressions of the book. The more reviews a book receives, the more exposure it gains, which can sometimes be a little bit of a chicken and egg situation!
More than anything, though, I love interacting with readers on Facebook, Twitter, and my blog. Having that personal connection with a reader takes the writing experience to another level!
Can you summarize your book release plan for the next year?
I’m currently working on the sequel to Between, which is titled Hell Transporter. Aiden MacRae is a Transporter who takes souls from earth to heaven. In the next book, we meet his counterpart. The first draft is about a third complete right now and while I’d love to have it done sooner, it will probably be out in the spring of next year.
