Excerpt #3 (Levi Ian Bryson & Emily Ador Riddle):

With a mischievous grin, Levi twists until I'm the one lying back against the log. The way he studies my every feature… like he has to have me… makes my heart skip.
Almost but not quite touching, his lips hover right above mine. "I thought he'd never leave. Would you mind terribly if I kiss you again? I've been waiting patiently long enough," he says softly.
The heat coursing through me has grown scalding, a feat I wouldn’t have thought to be possible until now. I nod eagerly and meet his lips on their way down to mine. Levi kisses me long and hard, and it still isn’t enough for the two of us.
He props himself up on an elbow and uses his other hand to trace my neck, shoulder, and arm before sneaking his hand beneath my shirt's hem and sliding it toward my belly button. He runs his hands over my stomach, my side, and back. There is a fire blazing along his path, and every part of me that hasn’t been caressed by him begs to be. Everything about this kiss makes our afternoon kiss and its excitement pale in comparison.
"Your skin in so soft. I'd give anything to see you in your bikini again," he mumbles around our kiss.
"Maybe one day you will," I murmur, knowing full well I would strip down to my swimsuit right now for him if Tope weren't around.
Levi kisses me again, and this time it's with an intensity that feels like he can't get enough of me. He doesn't pull back even the tiniest bit until Tope returns and loudly clears his throat.

Excerpt #2 (Levi Ian Bryson & Emily Ador Riddle):

Licking the corner of his mouth and driving me insane, Levi is a little breathless when he asks, "Emily, would you mind terribly if I kiss you?" His words are low and seductive, but I hear them perfectly.
He and his beauty hypnotize me, and I feel myself nod. I want him to do just that so bad that I almost lean over and kiss him myself without asking for permission.
Levi does not move. His voice is husky when he says, "I don't want you to kiss me because I'm a man, and you've been conditioned your whole life to do whatever men tell you to do. I want you to kiss me because it's what you want. Do you want to kiss me, Emily?"
He reaches up and runs his thumb across my lower lip. My breath hitches with his touch. The way he asks me if I want to kiss him and the touch that promises there can be more—so much more—is sexy enough to wake my senses and send hormones crashing through every cell in my body. I nod again. This time with more enthusiasm.
Levi's lip quirks up, and he leans over, very gently touching his lips to mine. Seconds ago, I'd have thought the touch of his finger to my lips to be the most amazing feeling in the world. With his lips on mine and his heat pulsing through me, I know there's no comparison. I'm having emotions I never knew existed. I'd read about these passions my entire life, but I'd never once suspected a kiss could be so warm… so moist… so exciting. But, that's exactly what it is with Levi. Everything with him is exhilarating and new.

Excerpt #1 (Levi Ian Bryson & Emily Ador Riddle):

Without hesitating, I pull my shirt up the tiniest bit and slightly lower my shorts, showing Levi the bruises Lorenzo left on me when he drove my hipbones into the hard porcelain sink earlier.

"I'm pretty sure he'll use me as a punching bag most of the time, considering the bruises he left on me this morning. There's a few I can't even show you," I say, watching Levi and waiting for his response.

Levi stares speechlessly at my bruises. I see the anger roll over him. I'd rarely witnessed men getting angry over injustices carried out against women. In my world, women are expected to stoically take every blow sent their way without complaint.

Levi's fury is quiet when he asks, "How did he do this, Emily? Did he force himself on you?"

My laugh is nervous. I look away. "Yeah… I guess you can say that, but Aunt Tess walked in and he stopped. It could've been a lot worse."

Levi's words are tender when he grabs both of my hands in his. "Emily, I don't care what your father says or what any other man in your commune says, for that matter. No one should ever touch you unless you and you alone have given them permission. This is your body. Not anyone else's."

I study every inch of Levi's face. His eyes are glassy with sincerity. His nose might well be carved from stone it's so flawless. His lips are perfectly shaped. The more I study him, the closer we get. Finally, I can feel his warmth and taste his breath.

He whispers, "I wish you could see what I see. I meant it when I said you're the most beautiful woman I've ever met. You're stronger than you know. I'm sure of this because you've spent the last hour with me because I'm lost even though you and I know you're not supposed to be here with me, much less talking to me."

Neither of us says anything else. Instead, we stare long and hard at each other. I breathe in Levi's soap and pine forest fragrance. Something about it is comforting, safe... and addicting. He squeezes my hand tighter and leans even nearer to me. Moving my gaze from his, I focus on his lips and fantasize about what it would be like to be kissed by lips as full and soft as his. I gulp around the lump in my throat.

Grave Bound (Secrets, #1) Chapter 1

Believe it or not... I'm going to share Grave Bound's first chapter with everyone. It sets the tone for what turns out to be a very powerful story that is both easy to read and hard to put down. If you haven't read the Prologue, I strongly suggest that you click here (Prologue) and read it first. It is not required reading before you read Chapter 1 Lies, Lies, and More Lies, but it is equally amazing.

Once you are finished, you should take a few minutes to register for the Michael Kors Watch Giveaway. I've not had anyone post the significance of the watch as the giveaway prize. The most original post will get a gift not yet revealed (signed paperback copy of Grave Bound... *wink*).

Enjoy chapter 1 (and the prologue) and don't forget to leave me a line letting me know your thoughts!

*This book was written for +17 due to sexual situations and profanity.

Emily

"Happily ever after my ass!" I say bitterly before slamming my book closed and throwing it into the lake. Spread open and facedown, the cheap, ragged paperback floats along the surface, gliding farther and farther away from the lake's edge.
I get absolutely no satisfaction when it soaks up so much water it's finally dragged below the ripples of the lake's inky surface. Nothing about the book's death (at my hands) makes me feel better because it's not Lorenzo or any of the other people who've betrayed me, the people I hate bone deep right now.
I look around and realize everyone who accompanied me to the lake for the first swim of the summer has long since headed home. My best friends, Becca, Kira, and Patti, had never seen me in such a weird mood. They had no idea what's going on with me or what to do about it. Since I couldn't talk to them about my problems, they got irritated and decided leaving me alone to think was their best option.
They were right.
Refusing to feel sorry for myself, I take a deep breath of the humid lake air and listen to the blue birds singing in the distance. For the millionth time, I wish I were more like my friends… wish I could conform… wish I didn't resent with every fiber of my being the fate in store for me. It's the destiny of every woman in my community. The biggest difference between the rest of the women and me is the fact that my entire future was just put into the hands of the vilest man I've ever known, and theirs wasn't. Repulsion has a name, and it's Lorenzo William Bijou.
"Stop it! There's still time for you to make Owen change his mind. This is the first official day of summer. The first day without Owen or the boys. I don't want to spend the next three months worrying about something that may never happen," I say aloud to myself.
I wish I could get back into the same frame of mind I'd been in when I went door-to-door earlier that morning, begging Becca, Kira, and Patti to blow off their chores and celebrate my summer of freedom. Right now, I'd give anything in my possession to get back the naive happiness I felt before I learned that Owen—my father —and Brian, Joe, and Phil—my older brothers—deceived me in ways I'd never seen coming.
Staring mindlessly at the sun reflecting off the lake's deceptively calm surface, I think back to the morning's mischievousness. At first, my friends refused to sneak away for a day of carefree swimming. Then, I gave them my puppy dog eyes and reminded them that all of the commune leaders, which included our fathers and brothers, were gone for three entire months. With the men away, there was no one for us to wait on and no one to punish us if we got caught.
Well… almost no one.
Unable to resist me or my big brown eyes, Becca, Kira, and Patti eventually conceded and joined me in reporting to the workstation at the union hall, doubling over, and swearing we were all suffering from violent stomach viruses. Covering our tracks, I even stuck my finger down my throat. With tears streaming down my face, I dashed toward the bathroom, gagging and covering my mouth.
Aunt Tess ran into the bathroom behind me and held my hair away from my face while I threw up the cereal I'd eaten for breakfast. I hadn't expected Tess to follow me or for her to make such a big deal out of my being sick. Tess is the closest thing I have to a mother, and I always hate to make her worry.
"Emily Ador Riddle, why did you come here if you're sick? It's obviously contagious. Look at your friends. Now, every one of these kids will probably get sick, and we'll be up for days cleanin' up vomit, changin' diapers, and keepin' 'em hydrated. Y'all go back home, and I'll be by to check on you later," Tess said, pulling my hair back into the Scrunchie she fished from her pocket.
Surprised by her uncharacteristic outburst, I noticed that Tess scolded me with a North Louisiana drawl that was more pronounced than usual.
With my hair out of my face, I noted Tess's steel-blue eyes were bloodshot, and there were deep, dark circles beneath them. My aunt's hair was thrown up into a bizarrely messy bun rather than her normal freakishly neat French twist. Instead of her signature flowing tank dress, sandals, and wooden beads, my free-spirited aunt was wearing a wrinkled, oversized tee, jeans, and hiking boots. Something about Tess had me as worried for her as she was for me.
I wanted to ask her what was bothering her, but I knew better than to probe. Tess is as tight-lipped as her brother… my father… The Community's leader.
My shame and concern was abruptly replaced by panic when I realized Tess could come by my house to check on me while I was out playing hooky at the lake.
I shook my head. "No, Aunt Tess. You're right. I never should've come in. Don't stop by. The more you're around me, the higher the chances of you gettin' sick. I'll be fine. If I need anythin', I'll let you know. I promise."
Tess studied me. "I don't know. You're over there at that big ol’ house all by yourself. What if you get too weak to go get help? I still don't understand why you wouldn't stay with me this summer. That's our tradition. Late night reading and girl talk. I'm gonna miss it," Tess said. I looked away as the disappointment registered on her face.
My decision to spend the summer alone at my father's house rather than with Tess had everything to do with Tess's “adopted” son. Tess unofficially—and more than a little begrudgingly—adopted the now eighteen-year-old Lorenzo after his mother was killed in an accident several years ago. I love my father's sister the way I'd love a mother if I had one. Unfortunately, my love and respect for Tess doesn't spill over to Lorenzo.
For reasons I still don't understand, Owen demanded Tess become Lorenzo's mother, and she knew refusing wasn’t an option. Not in the commune.
Instantly, Tess becomes the proud parent of a sociopath. I roll my eyes at the absurdity of my father's demands.
Lorenzo's mother, Viv Bijou, had been a beautiful and eccentric woman. For my entire life, I had heard rumors about her. Most of the gossip centered on her being a tainted union hall whore. In the commune, tainted is slang for a woman who's had an out-of-wedlock affair.
In Viv's case, her affair was with a man outside the commune, and it left her pregnant with Lorenzo. When Viv's daddy found out what she had done, he tracked her down like a bloodhound, dragged her back to the commune, and let The Community's elders beat her nearly to death with a razor whip.
To this day, I still remember accidentally walking in on Viv while she was trying on some hand-me-down clothes at Tess's house. The red-raised scars that angrily crisscrossed her back were gruesome and ugly. Viv's unfortunate decisions made her the poster child for the commune's young girls… an example of what happens when you try to leave, an action not tolerated by the commune's leaders.
Even now, it saddens me to know Viv's scars were the reason Lorenzo's daddy refused to take Viv back or have anything to do with his son. Scarred for life, pregnant with an illegitimate child, and now tainted, Viv had been sent to live at the union hall. After she delivered Lorenzo, she was given no choice but to become a whore, because in the elders' eyes whoring is all tainted women are good for.
I never once cared that Viv was tainted. What scared me was the fact that she was deeply disturbed and, at times, filled with a rage that frightened even the bravest commune resident. Regrettably, Viv's mental problems and pure hatred were passed down to Lorenzo.
I jumped at the banging on the bathroom door. "Tess, what's going on in there," a harsh and angry voice yelled.
Like a bitter sibling, Lorenzo hates every second Tess and I spend together. Since the locked door was preventing him from knowing exactly what we were doing and every word we were saying, he was pissed.
Lorenzo's a man amongst The Community's leaders now that he's eighteen. I had to remind myself so I wouldn't tell him what I really thought about him.
Tess's head snapped toward the banging. For the briefest of moments, I saw a flash of fear in her eyes.
"Y-you're right, Emi. I want you to go home and get some rest. I'll come by in the mornin' to check on you. Call me if you need anythin'," Tess said, tenderly pushing an invisible strand of hair behind my ear.
Ashamed of my dishonesty, I nodded and looked down before Tess realized there was nothing wrong with me but the web of lies I was spinning and the pounds of guilt weighing me down. Tess opened the door for the tall and muscular Lorenzo. He looked past her, and his stare raked up and down my body. He made me feel naked even though I was wearing conservative cutoff shorts and a halter-top. Unconsciously, I cross my arms.
If Lorenzo's features belonged to anyone else, I'd find the boulder of a man one of the most handsome I've ever seen. His hair is cappuccino brown and wavy; his eyes are steel blue; his skin is perfectly bronzed; and his muscles are big and bulky. Unfortunately, they don't belong to anyone else. They are bundled up within Lorenzo's sadistic personality, and I loathe everything about him.
"What's wrong with you? You up to somethin' now that your daddy and brothers ain't around?" Lorenzo said with a sneer.
Tess patted his arm and tried too hard to be chipper when she said, "Heavens no, Lorenzo. They all have stomach viruses. They're goin' back home 'til they feel better." Tess looked back at me. "Don't forget I'll be by in the mornin', sweetie."
I nodded before going to the sink and washing my face and hands. I had to get rid of the disgusting stomach acid coating the inside of my nose and making everything reek of puke.
I heard the door shut behind Tess and assumed I was alone. When I stood up and found two faces—mine dripping wet and Lorenzo's suggestively smirking—in the mirror, I was startled.
He may be a few months younger than me, but he stands at least half a foot taller than my five-foot-nine frame.
His sneer had turned into the kind of possessive glare he always has when it's just the two of us. While he ogled me, I silently questioned what I did to make him hate me so much. Whatever it was must have been bad. I wondered if it was too late to apologize.
"You know your daddy and brothers felt pretty bad when Viv died. Insteada findin' out why they was so guilty, I decided to use their guilt to get somethin' I've always wanted," he said, raising his eyebrows dramatically. "You. I asked Owen if you can be promised to me. With a little bit of pressure, he finally agreed."
My mouth dropped open, every bit of air gushing from my lungs. My shock was the exact response Lorenzo was looking for judging by the gleam in his eyes and his malicious lopsided grin.
"That's right, Emi. I'll be the father o’ your children and the one to decide if you get sent away when you're twenty-one."
You've freakin' got to be kiddin' me, I thought.
With a desperate determination, I narrowed my eyes. "I'll kill myself first!" I whispered, and I meant every hate-filled syllable.
My current disrespect for Lorenzo would have been intolerable in Owen's eyes. If he or the boys heard how I'd just spoken to Lorenzo, I'd be picking myself up off the floor and nursing a bloody lip.
Within The Community, there are rules that have to be followed without exception. One of the most important ones is the woman's place. Women within the commune are taught from birth that they are essentially second-class citizens who are required to treat men—every single one of them—with reverence no matter what they do or say. Nothing less. Ever.
If what Lorenzo told me is true, he will be the only person who will have a say in whether or not I'm allowed to live within The Community with the babies I'll be forced to have with him. If he wants, he'll be able to send me away (to God only knows where) while the women of the commune raise my children. Soon, he'll be able to do whatever he wants to me. When that time comes, my back-talking will haunt me, but I can't help myself. I refuse to cower.
With the familiar arrogance the men within the commune are conditioned to possess, Lorenzo chuckled. "Yeah right. I've seen you. You're just like Tess. You'll do anythin' Owen tells you to do. The two of you are the good little lap dogs he's taught you to be. Actually, that's what I like about you. As soon as you're mine, you'll be my lap dog, and I have somethin' I want you to lick… long and hard."
He forced his hips against me, trapping me against the sink. He snaked his hand around my waist, pulled me closer to him, and used his free hand to cup my breast. As he squeezed it tight, I tried not to scream out in pain. I bit my tongue until it bled, refusing to give in to his taunts. Tears welled up, but I would not let him see me cry.
"Damn, I want to fuck you right now," he whispered in my ear, sucking the lobe into his mouth and giving it a little bite.
Even with an empty stomach, I wanted to throw up at the thought.
Thankfully, there was another knock on the door. Lorenzo groaned in pure irritation. "Right now, I want to fuckin' kill whoever’s on the other side of that door. Since I'm sure it's your nosey aunt, I won't."
He pushed against me one more hard time, pinched my nipple until it stung, and kissed my neck. "Think about me tonight will you, Emi?" he said hoarsely before flinging open the door. "She's all yours."
I still remember looking in the mirror and seeing that Tess had indeed returned. We stared at each other. Based on my hurt, she knew what he'd just revealed. The earlier fear I'd seen in her eyes returned, and with it, I knew Lorenzo told the truth.
Until that very minute, I'd naively assumed my father's status as the leader of the commune would give me advantages not offered to others. Today, I learned I would not be given any more privilege or respect than the other women in The Community.
I glared at Tess. All guilt and worry had vanished. "Don't you come check on me in the mornin'. Do you hear me?" I said hatefully. The phlegm in my throat kept the words from traveling any farther than Tess's ears.
Tess nodded, wiped a tear from her eye, ducked her head in shame, and walked away.

Indie Author Series: Author Page (Basics and Bonuses)

This week, the YA Author Club sponsors will share with you everything you ever wanted to know about the all important author page. We will talk about what's good to include while reminding you what you should probably keep to yourself. Interestingly enough, this particular topic has suddenly reminded me of how many author pages I have and how exhausting it would be to maintain all of them if I didn't keep the information on them consistent.

Believe it or not, I actually have more than the ones I'm listing below, but these are the most important. Take a few minutes and see what advice I can give you for each. Then, go to the other sponsors' sites and see what they have to say.

T. R. Graves Author Blog - This is one of the best way for readers/fans/followers to get to know you, the author. It's free and worth every minute you spend building, sharing, and loaning. It is extremely important that you treat this like the advertising tool it is. By this, I mean that you must post frequently... and those posts should be interesting/relevant/well thought out. If you think you are going to be able to periodically go out there and post a few sentences that are boring even to you, you will find that you will have a hard time attracting followers. Without followers, your important book notices will not be heard or shared.

I should also mention that neatness counts when it comes to your blog. Take the time to make it neat and make extra sure the information is easy to read (too much clutter makes it hard to see the important facts). I'll be the first to say that there is a fine line. You want to include enough to interest your visitors without overwhelming them and preventing them from remembering the reason they came to visit.

Amazon's Author Page - This is another great place to attract fans/friends/followers. In order to do that, you much link your books so your visitors will know which are yours without being forced to search each one out separately (which they will not do). Link your blog and your Twitter account so this visitor can get a one-stop-shop. Again, they will not go out and find these sites on their own. If it exists right in front of them and it interests them, you have succeeded. Don't forget to drive them to your blog... your Facebook Fan Page... etc.

Facebook Fan Page - This is extremely, extremely important. It's one of the first places readers to go to search you out. I get more comments from new readers on my Facebook Fan Page than any of my other author pages.

Just like with your blog, you will need to post frequently and keep it relevant. Making things as simple as possible, I've got my blog and my twitter account linked to my Facebook Fan Page. This keeps me from having to manually post (periodically it fails) anything related to my blog.  A few minutes after I hit publish on my blog, it shows up on Facebook. Anything that saves time is worth it so don't forget to link... link... link.

I should also mention that I have two views for my Facebook Fan Page (courtesy of Wix). With Wix, I've created another way for fans/friends/followers to connect. Wix's Facebook Fan Page view is interactive and leads people straight to all of the places they can connect with me, buy my books, or keep up with my updates.

Goodreads Author Page - There is all kinds of important information you can include on Goodreads. For me, the most important thing I can tell authors is to make sure you create one AND designate yourself as an author. I have people who contact me all the time and tell me they've written a book. When I go to their Goodreads account, I find that they have not designated themselves as an author or taken the time to get their books posted there or linked to them.

If you have committed yourself to being an author, then you should shout it from the rooftops or designate yourself an author on Goodreads (which ever feels most natural for you). Don't forget to link your Facebook page, your Twitter account, and your blog. Remember let technology work for you.

Twitter Profile - Of course, this is the author page for you if you have a Twitter account so treat it like it is just that important. Add your latest book as the wallpaper and the website where you'd like your followers to go. For me, I've added my About.me site (I'll talk about that next). Just like with your blog and your Facebook page, you must post. I'll be the first to say that I don't post constantly, but I do post consistently (with the publishing of my weekly blog post and periodically more often). And, the recurring theme is link. Link Twitter to your blog, your Facebook page, and your Goodreads account.

about.me Dashboard - about.me is basically a virtual business card. Again, I've used my book covers as the wallpaper while updating the site with any and every way possible to contact me or keep up with what I'm doing.

In just one screenshot, people can find out who you are, what you do, what your upcoming works look like, where you live, who you are affiliated with,  etc.

I want to take a few minutes to remind you to get - or make - yourself an author picture. No one in the world hates a picture more than me, but you must have one. It should not be one where you are duck-lipping (Urban Dictionary says it is a word) and standing in front of a mirror... unless your books are about teenage girls who stand in front of their mirror taking duck-lip pictures.

YOUR Book Cover/Flap - I've saved the best for last. Your book cover/flap should be a great place for your readers to get to know you, find out where they can get to know you better, and have a link where they can buy more books.

It's okay to advertise/market your other books. Take advantage of the work you've put into writing the best book ever and give your readers the tiny nudge they need to go straight to your other books.

Grave Bound (Secrets, #1) Soundtrack

Anyone who knows me understands how much I love to read. In fact, I have many fans/friends/followers who await my reviews so they will know which book will be next on their list to read. These same people have noticed that I've not done many book reviews lately. Today, I'm going to explain why I've not been able to read/review books for the last few months.

Everything about Grave Bound has been different for me. It has taken every bit of my attention to write this book as quickly as it was written. Because of that, I've just not had the time to devote to the reading of another book. Yes, I know about audiobooks. Yes, I could probably have listened to a few, but something deep inside of me told me to avoid any and all books. After thinking about it, I realized there were numerous reasons behind this unconscious decision.

1) Since I wanted Grave Bound to be different from anything else available, I avoided - almost all - books while I invented the story and created its characters.
2) Given Grave Bound's delicate subject matter, I was just too emotionally drained with the writing of that book and the telling of Emily's story to devote any time or energy to another book.
3) Finally, I was testing myself to see if I could write the entire novel and have it edited, formatted, and published within four months... leaving me little time for anything else.

The good news is that I was able to write Grave Bound and release it on time. The bad news is that I found myself craving the artistic creativity of others. In order to satisfy my need without turning toward other authors, I began listening to music non-stop. Because music was such an inspiration for this book, I decided to give everyone an idea of the singers who moved me while I wrote Grave Bound. For all of you, I've created a soundtrack that includes samples of the music.

Enjoy!

Official Grave Bound (Secrets, #1) Release Giveaway

When I made the decision to enter the NaNoWriMo Contest last October, I never expected that I would be able to write, edit, format, and release a 97,000 page novel in four months, but I did. By the end of November, I'd written 50,000+ words and was able to officially call myself a 2012 NaNoWriMo Winner.

The product of the work I put into the writing, Claudia Lucia McKinney of Phatpuppy Art put into the cover design, and Cassie McCown of gathering leaves put into the editing is all bundled up in Grave Bound (Secrets, #1). It's official release date is March 1, 2013, and I'm celebrating this amazing accomplishment with a very unusual - yet unbelievably awesome - giveaway. Tope

I'm sitting in my office, staring at hundreds of pictures of a woman I've never met… yet somehow I can't stop thinking about.
Emily Ador Riddle.
The instant I saw the first photo of Emily—that first beautiful smile—and listened to her Aunt Tess tell me story after story, I was hooked. I knew then and there she was the one for me and that I'd never truly felt that way about anyone before.
Sure, there had been plenty of attractive girls. There had been lots of quick and easy fucks. There was even a long-term relationship. But work was the only mistress who'd held my attention for any period of time before Emily.
For the millionth time, I study her face and try to understand what makes her so different. What, that is, besides her unfathomable beauty. There's no doubt in my mind there's something more to her when I compare her to the other women I've been with.
Memorizing her every feature, I realize the answer is hidden deep within her chocolate-brown eyes. In them, I see sadness so profound that it tests my feelings in ways they've never been tested. The thought of her being unhappy makes me want to charge into the commune, throw her over my shoulder, and rescue her from the men who have, for all practical purposes, enslaved her.
Instinctively, I want to put her on a pedestal and have her every whim catered to. In fact, I've sworn dozens of times that I'll do just that if I ever get close enough to make her fall for me the way I've fallen for her.
Therein lies your problem, Romeo. She lives in a commune where the women aren't allowed to leave without supervision, and Owen, her dickhead father, will die before he lets you on those grounds without a search warrant. He'll kill them all first. Even Emily.
"Jesus! You're worse than a fuckin' forlorn teenager. You don't even know her. She's probably the biggest bitch ever," Baby, my very crass assistant, says, sighing when she walks into my office and finds me in the exact same position she left me in an hour ago.
Of course, Baby isn’t her real name. Her real name is Ainsley Renee Night. I found that out the day she was arrested for killing her father. Her piece of crap dad was even worse of a man than Owen. He'd been sneaking into her room and raping her almost every night since she turned twelve.
The day she turned eighteen, he decided to take it up a notch. In honor of her birthday, he sold an hour alone with her to a few of his closest friends. When Baby found out, she went temporarily insane, killed him, and beat the hell out of her drunkard mother for turning a blind eye to what he'd been doing to her for years.
Back then, I was a fledgling public defender. Ainsley Renee Night's case was dropped in my lap like a hot potato. When I made it to her jail cell, I knew things weren't what they seemed. Despite the ink-black hair, lips, and nails; the pierced ears, nose, lip, and tongue; and the hard-to-miss tattoos of violence peeking out at me, I knew she was no cold-blooded killer. Not with the way she curved in on herself in the corner of the cell and sucked her thumb like a two-year-old.
It took weeks of nonstop meetings for her to trust me. When she finally saw I was nothing like her father, she told me what she'd been enduring and what he was trying to introduce her to. I was so upset by the traumas of her childhood that I'd have killed the son of a bitch myself if he weren’t already dead.
Instead of passively agreeing to let them put her behind bars, I fought to get her the help she needed so she could live the rest of her life without the stigma of her abusive father's actions hanging over her head.
Taking advantage of every chance she's been given, Baby goes to school at night and takes online classes at lunch. She'll have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in no time, and I predict one day she'll be the best assistant DA in the parish.
Usually I don't have any trouble ignoring her smartass mouth or her constant sarcasm, but today's different. "Don't call her a bitch. She has enough people pushing her down without anyone else joining in," I snap.
This is the first time I've ever raised my voice to Baby, but she has to know I'm not going to tolerate name-calling. Especially when it comes to Emily.
Baby's mouth drops open and her lip quivers before she bites the ring in the corner. I feel bad for being such an ass to her when I see how my bad mood and short temper hurt her. The last person I ever want to remind her of is her father.
Dammit!
My mind snaps back to Emily. I wish Tess never told me that Owen is letting Lorenzo marry Emily. I wish I didn't know Lorenzo is an arrogant prick. I wish I could stop thinking about what Lorenzo's going to do to Emily. No matter what she wants—and Tess swears Emily hates Lorenzo—she's going to be forced to marry him. Then, he’ll have his way with her because that's what they do in the commune.
Dammit! I think, again.
"Listen, Baby, I'm sorry. I've just got a lot on my mind. I didn't mean to be a shit to you."
She shakes her head. "No. You're right. I'm the last person in the world who should be judging people. If anything, me and her are kindred spirits. How about we work together to get her outta that commune so we can get to know her better? That'll give me the chance to see for myself if she's really good enough for you," she says, winking a thick black-lined eye my way as proof she's forgiven me.
I give her a crooked smile. "I'm pretty sure I'm the one who's not good enough for her, but thanks for thinking otherwise."
Turning her back on me and busying herself with straightening a stack of my papers, Baby asks, "Are you going camping again this weekend?"
I wish she hadn't picked up on how often I've been going camping at Black Lake, the lake next to the commune. What she doesn't know is that I'm spending my weekends there exploring the area's topography and taking pictures. When I'm not out there or working, I'm studying every inch of the forest and analyzing the best ways in and out of the commune. I'm determined to have a plan for rescuing Emily when the time comes.
"Yeah. Levi's coming with me this weekend. He's back for the summer and insists the one thing he wants to do is go camping," I say.
With the mere mention of Levi's name, Baby's back straightens and her boobs pop out. It's the same reaction every woman who's ever met Levi has. Everywhere we go, women fall in love with him and make it very obvious they're willing to cater to his every fantasy. Baby's no exception.
A second later, I catch a glimpse of Emily's sad brown eyes in one of the pictures Baby is packing away. I can't help but wonder if she would be tempted by the charms of my cousin.
Surely not.
As soon as the thought crosses my mind, I hear a pop and look down. The pen I'm holding has snapped in two. Dark blue ink is splattered everywhere and leaking down my fingertips.
Dammit!
