Feature & Follow Friday #154

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

Meme: Feature Follow

Day: Friday (yes... I'm late)

Premis: The meme hosts will 1) feature two (2) blog sites and 2) propose two questions that participating bloggers will answer on their blogs sites and give their followers the chance to join in.ve

This week's featured blogs: Megan @ Bookworm in Love and Book Cupid

Follow these sites.

This week's featured questions: Don't forget to leave a comment.

Q: Have you ever read a book that you thought you would hate? Did you end up hating it? Did you end up loving it? Or would you never do that?

A: I would never do that. I go out of my way to make sure the book is well within my genre and/or that the story-line is one that I'm sure I will enjoy before I begin reading. I also take a glance at reviews. While I don't put a lot of stock in reviews (one person could hate something I love), I periodically read them in order to make an educated decision. This method seems to be working well. I almost never happen upon a book that I don't love OR at least appreciate.

Indie Author Series: Formatting

Welcome back to the Indie Author Series. This week, the contributors will be talking about their challenges/ achievements/recommendations as it relates to formatting.

Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that formatting can be painfully excruciating... can make you scream curse words you had no idea you knew. The most important thing I can tell you once you've gotten to the point of total frustration you should walk away, take some deep breaths, and go to Smashwords Style Guide for step-by-step instructions or let a company like @WriteIntoPrint do the work for you.

For me, there are three standard versions of formatting:

  • Printed Copy Format for createspace
    • For this version, I create a formatted word document that includes all of the 'extras' I like to see in a book (glyphs, large first letters when new chapters begin, headers, footers, blank page so that the new chapter can begin on a odd numbered page, etc.).
    • Once this version is created, I have to create a PDF file and upload it into Createspace's tool and let them vet the formatting.
    • Usually 24 hours later, I have a confirmation that the formatting is approved, and I order a PROOF to do my own quality review or I can go through their electronic real-time reviewer. The electronic reviewer is not quite the same as looking at the book in your hand and making sure you catch all mistakes, but it is pretty darn good.
    • If all is well with the book, I approve and begin selling.
  • Kindle/Nook
    • With this version, I can can leave within the file most of the extras I included in the paperback version.
Thank goodness! But I have to remove the blank pages.
    • Once I do this, I upload the Word file into KDP/pubit's tools. Once it's uploaded, I have the option of viewing every page. I try to take advantage of doing that, but it will only help you catch BIG errors.
      • KDP recently implemented an upgrade to their tool that I LOVE. It catches spelling errors that are missed by you and your editor. Now, periodically, we've both seen the error and we mean for them to exist, but it's very, very nice to have a tool that acts as a final checks-and-balances.
    • Every time I upload a new file, I order a new copy of the ebook so I can see what the reader will see. There have been times when the upload didn't 'take' even though I got confirmation that it did (or its a matter of timing). I'll admit this can be difficult for both Kindle and Nook because they are committed to making sure you never repurchase a book. I have to go through lots of trouble to delete my previous version so I can do a quality review of the newest version. Again, there are times when Kindle and Nook work against me on this, but I try very, very hard.
      • The only other thing I'll mention here are the periodic page skip errors that I notice with
Nook's versions. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do about them because they don't exist in the file. I've tried uploading and uploading and uploading, and they continue to be problematic. I've even opened dozens of customer service tickets and they can't find the problems either. With that being said, Nook owners may periodically have a page that ends abruptly and goes to the next page. All of the information is there, but it bothers my need for perfection... and I should mention that I never see traditional publishers with this type of problem on Nook. Hm!
  • Smashwords Formatting
    • This is the version that is the most problematic because it requires someone with lots of technical skills to get the books to pass the rigors of their meat grinder so your book can be sent to products geared toward iPads and phones.
      • I should clarify this. If you simply want your book on Smashwords, you can upload the same file you uploaded for Kindle/Nook. No harm. No foul. If you want the book to be mass distributed, you must get the formatting past the meat grinder. In order to do this you should grab Smashwords Style Guide and dive in for the long haul.
    • I can tell you right away to get rid of headers, footers, glyphs, any type of uniqueness. They are looking for conformity and consistency, which for me is quite interesting since the tools where these books will be read are among the most technologically advanced tools (iPads and smart phones). They should be able to accommodate these variances. Maybe they can. Maybe it's Smashwords meat grinder that can't. Either way, you must conform.
    • Interestingly enough, I have books that have made it through the meat grinder that I pulled back to add something (the announcement of a new book) only to find that the book's formatting will no longer go through the mead grinder because of issues not touched when the additions were made. In other words, the standards have changed, and I find they are getting harder and harder to 'overcome'. As such, I'm looking seriously toward finding a company who can do this job for me and let me get back to writing. This is where @WriteIntoPrint comes into the picture.
    • If you find you can't create a link-able table of contents, one that takes you straight to the chapters as you click on them (or you can do it, but Smashwords keeps telling you it's not working when you know that it is), you can contact a company like @WriteIntoPrint. They will update your document to meet  Smashwords' specifications.

Giveaway Announcements - Watch, Gift Card, & eBooks

The day I met you is the day by which all others will be measured - Levi Ian Bryson

Without question, this particular 'Levi musing' appears to be everyone's favorite.

The significance of the watch and the giveaway can be summed up with this heartfelt claim... and the way it was inscribed (in a circular fashion much like the illustration to the left) onto the back of the watch Levi left Emily before he went to stop Lorenzo.

I can absolutely tell you that this has been quite the whirlwind month. I've gone from 250 Facebook Fan Page LIKES to 1,250+  and increased my Fans/Friends/Followers by hundreds. On top of all of that, I've sold tons of books and actually made it to the top 1,750 of all books being sold on Amazon. While there's still a ways to go, these are all great starts when you consider the fact that I completely switched genre's with Grave Bound's debut (meaning I had to attract a whole new set of fans, ones who are very picky about their New Adult books).

Please Note: Every single person who entered the Michael Kors giveaway received an eBook copy of Grave Bound

So far, Grave Bound's reviews/reviewers have been positive. I've included a few of my favorite comments:
"...Not only is it a great story and beautifully writen but the emotion behind it is amazing...."
"OMG, OMG, I have never loved a book so much. I couldn't put it down. Tope, Levi and Em are wonderful characters...."
I loved this book and did not want to put it down!!! It is such a unique story...it really grabbed my attention right away. I became so emotionally involved in it I found myself yelling at my kindle and crying at times too. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next one in the series to come out!!!
"The day I met you is the day by which all others will be measured" -L.I.B.
"... The author is very clever in the way she writes; there are so many twists and turns – Grave bound will keep you glued to the very last page!.... I am happy to say that I am completely 100% hooked on this series, and I can’t wait for the next novel – Underground (Secrets #2) to be released!"
".... Like any WELL WRITTEN novel – it’s complete with twist and turns and unexpected events!
The characters of this novel are so very well written. I honestly felt complete RESENTMENT for Lorenzo & just about every emotion I could towards Emily. I’ve read many, many books in my life – but this one pulled more emotions out of me than any book has in awhile! Grave Bound is one of those books that sinks its teeth into you from page one and doesn't let you go until the very end. AND THEN – it leaves you wanting MORE! I cannot wait until the next book to see what happens!"
"I am glad I got started at the very beginning of this series, it was so emotionally powerful I couldn't stop being draw into the storyline. It does handle some mature topics as amazon warns but it is done very well and not just for sensational purposes. I can't wait to read the next in the series."
"Omg I haven't cried this much since I read the fault in our stars." AND "People I am telling you go buy this book now! It is the most amazing book in the entire world...dare I say it? Dare I? IT IS BETTER THAN THE HUNGER GAMES PEOPLE! (And you all know how obsessed I am with THG.)"
"@WarriorsSeries Just finished reading Grave Bound! Omg that book was amazing! I need book2 ASAP! Thank you so much!"

Feature & Follow Friday #153

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

Meme: Feature Follow

Day: Friday

Premis: The meme hosts will 1) feature two (2) blog sites and 2) propose two questions that participating bloggers will answer on their blogs sites and give their followers the chance to join in.

This week's featured blogs: Insightful Minds Reviews and Book Sniffers Anonymous
Follow these sites. (Don't forget to check out Insightful Minds Reviews' review of Grave Bound.)

This week's featured questions: Pick the question you like best and leave a comment.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure as far as reading? Is it a genre, or is it a certain type of book?

A: I'd like to say New Adult is a guilty reading pleasure, but it is more of a guilty writing pleasure. I LOVE writing New Adult because it gives me flexibilities I was not afforded when writing young adult. I don't have to censor the language or the love scenes. I can make them real, natural, and complete.

OR

Q: Tell us about the most emotional scene you've ever read in a book and how you reacted?

A: I was extremely upset when Rose (Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy #3) by  realized Demetri had turned Strigoi. I did not see that coming.

Indie Author Spotlight: K.C. Blake

Author Bio:   K.C. Blake is a ninja on the keyboard.  When she is locked away in her office, pounding out another story, no one dares disturb her.  She probably wouldn’t hear them anyway.  They don’t get it.  They think she’s in her office, but she’s lost in another world.  Sometimes she is fighting vampires or hunting ghosts.  Sometimes she is running with a werewolf pack or falling in love with a misunderstood creature.  Her books appeal to lovers of the paranormal.  Whether you are twelve or fifty, you will fall in love with her stories.

Interview:

1) What is your all-time favorite book and why?
City of Bones.  I love the way Cassandra Clare writes, so visual that I can see it, and I love her awesome characters.

2) Is there an author you could be compared to or popular fictional characters your book's characters could relate to and why?
I don’t think my characters are like any other characters I’ve read about.  My writing is my own.  I’ve been told I have a unique voice, a unique way of writing.  Some people love it and some of don’t.

3) Can you give us your favorite quote from one of your books and explain it?
This is a hard one. I can’t think of one off the top of my head, so I will use one that people have put on Goodreads as their favorite.  It is from Vampires Rule.

“Stop!” she screamed. “Don’t hurt him.”
“Back off!” Billy shouted.
She yanked harder on Billy’s arm.
“He isn’t a vampire anymore, idiot. Look! Do you see that big, yellow thing up in the sky? That’s called the sun. It’s shining down on him, and he isn’t exploding. His fangs are gone. He’s as human as we are. Case closed.”
Billy stared up at the sky, his jaw slack. “Not possible.”
Jack mumbled, “They don’t call me Jackpot for nothing.”
“What?” Billy blinked at him.
“Private joke.”

I think it’s pretty self-explanatory.  Jack was a vampire and now he’s not, and his brother just found out.

4) What types of things/people/music inspires you and makes you want to keep writing?
There isn’t any certain thing that inspires me.  Once in a while a movie or book will speak to me.  Sometimes a person I know will say something that sends me into a ‘what if’ daydream.  As for music, I love listening to songs while I write.  What I listen to depends on what sort of scene I’m writing.  I need a song that captures the emotions of the scene.  Then I can picture it in my head, and I’ll listen to that song a hundred times if I have to in order to finish what I’m working on.

5) Describe your typical writing day or week.
Within five minutes of waking I am thinking about whatever book I’m working on.  I might listen to music and daydream about it for a while, or I might jot down some notes.  Usually I spend time on-line before pulling my book up on the computer.  I check email, do some research, and play games (lol) before starting to work.  Then I work on and off all day until I get a chapter finished or am too tired to keep going.  I take breaks quite often.  If I don’t, my eyes and head hurt so bad the next day that I can’t work at all.

6) Is there a food or drink do you have to have when you're writing?
No.  Eating and or drinking distracts me from the writing.  If anything, once in a while I will have some chocolate, something I can just pop into my mouth.  I’ll use it as a reward.  I get one after I finish a certain amount of pages.

7) Can you tell us what you're working on right now (& possibly provide an excerpt & cover)?
I am editing a book called Bait, the first in a new series.  Here is the blurb for it:

At sixteen, Bay-Lee Bishop is not your typical girl.  The last thing she wants is to be popular, but flying below the radar isn’t easy when you’re the tallest girl in the eleventh grade.  She works hard to keep a steady C point average, never raises her hand in class, and avoids extra-curricular activity of any kind.  The other students would be stunned to learn she’s living under an alias as she and her uncle move from town to town, just barely staying a step ahead of the monsters hunting her just because she’s Van Helsing’s daughter.

Life is weird.  Then it gets worse.  A reaper uses her closet to cross over with a dire warning the day before she’s whisked away to her new school.  This time it’s the school she was always meant to attend, a school that trains hunters.

This is what she’s been waiting for her whole life, only it isn’t anything like she imagined. The other students hate her, something evil is killing hunters, and her mentor refuses to give her the slightest bit of help.  Determined to make her father proud, Bay-Lee focuses on her training.  Nothing is going to distract her.  Not border monsters or wraiths or the boy with jungle green eyes.

For Bay-Lee, love is not an option.  But try telling that to her heart.

Excerpt: (keep in mind this book is still being edited)
At some point during the night a stranger crawled into Bay-Lee’s bed while she snored softly, unaware.  The mattress springs squeaked in complaint beneath the additional weight as he reclined on his side and stared down at her face in the moonlight.  It bothered him that she continued to sleep.  After all the stories he’d heard about this girl, exploited rumors verging on myth, he’d expected more from her.  Shouldn’t she be able to sense danger?
This was Van Helsing’s daughter?  She looked insignificant, vulnerable beneath the green sheet.  He could snap her neck so easily—and maybe he should.  The world would continue on, undisturbed, but the dark cloud hanging over his head would finally dissipate.
A fraction of moonlight filtered through partially open curtains, not enough to see clearly, but it didn’t matter because he’d seen pictures of this girl on Van Helsing’s desk.  Her features were burned into his retinas.  Every time he went into the office he tried not to look at the photographs, purposely pointing his gaze elsewhere.
There was something about her, something unsettling which inevitably pulled him back to stare at her reproduced image.  She looked like an average girl at first glance.  A pretty face framed by dark hair that nearly reached her waist, parted in the middle and layered stared back at him.  Of Brazilian descent, her eyes were the darkest of browns, nearly black.  They hid a mountain of secrets.  She had attitude to spare and the camera caught it, recording it for future historians—if the prophecies were correct, they would want to study her.
She possessed a ‘bite me’ expression that must drive vampires crazy.
Fortunately, he was not a vampire.
Her mouth bothered him the most. Full lips haunted his dreams with a secretive smile curving the ends and a bottom lip that begged to be nibbled on. Sometimes, when he wasn’t carefully controlling his thoughts, he wondered what she would taste like.  In his dreams, when he wasn’t fully in control of his mind, he kissed her without ceasing.  He wondered what would happen if he kissed her in real life.  Would it stir something deep in his soul?  Would the prophecy come true?
Something hard lodged in his throat and he swallowed.  It was a near miss, so he swallowed again.  Kissing her shouldn’t even be a blip on the radar. This girl was the reason he didn’t have a home or a family.  It was her fault he’d grown up on the outside looking in, her fault people whispered behind his back, and her fault he was destined to die young.
Bay-Lee stirred in her sleep.  Mumbling, she pushed against his chest with two fingers.  “Go ‘way.”
Cute like a box of kittens, for a second he forgot to hate her.  His heart momentarily softened—not for long.  The unfamiliar sensation was enough to wipe the half-smile from his face.  Delivering a mental kick to his brain, he reminded himself this girl was the last person in the world he could let his guard down around.  She was worse than trouble.  If he wasn’t careful, this seemingly harmless meeting would lead to his total destruction.
Ready to wake her, he leaned in close and whispered her (fake) name.  Like him, she was forced to live under an alias.  Michelle.
